MALLARD in Calgary / ÁNADE REAL en Calgary

The wild Mallard, Anas platyrhynchos, is the ancestor of domestic ducks. 

El  Ánade real, Anas platyrhynchos, es el antecesor salvaje de los patos domésticos.

The male is identified by its green head, white collar and chestnut breast, but the female is mottled brown. However, both have a metallic blue speculum.

Podemos diferenciar al macho por su cabeza de color verde, su collar blanco y su pecho de color marrón. Por el contrario la hembra presenta un moteado de color marrón. Aun así, ambos presentan una marca de color azul metálico en el lateral de su cuerpo.

Furthermore, the Mallard inhabits a wide range of habitat and climates, from Artic tundra to subtropical regions, and it is strongly migratory in the northern parts.

Además, este pato salvaje vive en un amplio rango de lugares, desde la tundra ártica hasta las regiones subtropicales, y suele migrar al sur cuando el frío invierno llega a las zonas del norte.

The Mallard is omnivorous, and it is abundant on ponds, lakes, and rivers.

El Ánade real es omnívoro, y lo podemos encontrar en charcas, lagos y ríos.

CANADA GOOSE on the Bow River / GANSO CANADIENSE en el río Bow

Canada goose, Branta canadensis, is the most common goose in North America, and it is easily to identified by its black head and neck and prominent white cheek patch.

El ganso canadiense, Branta canadensis, es el más común de los gansos en Norteamérica, y es muy fácil identificarlo por la mancha blanca que destaca en su cara y cuello negros.

They breeds in Canada and the northern United States in a variety of habitats, and they are monogamous and mate for life.

Se reproducen en Canada y el norte de Estados Unidos en una amplia variedad de hábitats. Además, es un animal monógamo, es decir, viven con su pareja de por vida.

       Canada goose are primarily herbivores, but they sometimes eat insects and fish.

El ganso Canadiense es principalmente herbívoros, pero también se alimenta de insectos                                                                  y peces.

When they are unable to swim and find food consequence of the winter conditions, they usually migrate flying in V-shaped formation to places where it is warmer and food is available. This V-shape requires less energy, and birds can fly longer distances. Furthermore, they usually follow the same migration path every year, and these paths are called rotes or flyways. However, some of the population has become non-migratory due to adequate winter food supply and a lack of former predators.

Cuando llega el invierno, y las condiciones ambientales empeoran, van a migrar a lugares donde el clima es mas cálido y hay suficiente recursos alimentarios. Normalmente van a migrar formando una "V", lo cual requiere menos energia y les permite volar largas distancias. Además, van a usar las mismas rutas migratorias cada año. De todas maneras, algunas poblaciones de ganso Canadiense se han vuelto no migratorias, debido a las buenas condiciones climáticas, la escasez de depredadores, y la disponibilidad de alimeto.
