HOUSE SPARROW in Calgary / GORRIÓN COMÚN en Calgary

The house sparrow, Passer domesticus, is a bird of the sparrow family, Passeridae. Furthermore, it has been introduced to America from Europe, and it is strongly associated with human habitations. Even though it is a sedentary bird, some or non-migratory, two subspecies are predominately migratory.

In addition, the house sparrow mostly feeds on the seeds of cereals and weeds, but it is opportunistic, so it is going to eat whatever food available. On the other hand, its main predators are housecats and birds of prey.

El gorrión común, Passer domesticus, es un ave de la familia Passeridae, el cual fue introducido en America desde Europa. Aunque es un ave sedentaria asociada a asentamientos humanos, hay dos subespecies que son migratorias.

Además, el gorrión es un ave oportunista que se alimenta principalmente de cereales y hierbas, pero también de cualquier otra cosa comestible que encuentre, y sus principales depredadores son los gatos domésticos y las aves de presa.

Black throat and brown nape of male are diagnostic, but the female and young are dull brown with a light eye stripe.

El macho tiene la garganta de color negro y la nuca de color marrón, mientras que la hembra y los jóvenes son de color marronaceo y carecen de la mancha negra en la garganta.

OSPREY in Calgary / AGUILA PESCADORA en Calgary

The osprey, Pandion haliaetus, is a diurnal bird of prey member of the family Pandionidae, which is also known as the sea hawk or fish eagle, but it is different from the African specie Haliaeetus vocifer. However, the fish eagle has a dark brown body above and white below, and a white head with a dark mask across the eyes. In addition, the female Osprey has a larger band of mottling across its chest.


El  águila pescadora, Pandion haliaetus, es un ave rapaz miembro de la familia Pandionidae, pero hay que tener cuidado y no confundirla con la especie africana Haliaeetus vocifer. De todas maneras, nuestra rapaz tiene la parte superior del cuerpo de color marrón oscuro y la parte inferior blanca. Su cabeza es de color blanco con un antifaz oscuro. Y podemos diferenciar ambos sexos porque la mancha moteada en el pecho de la hembra suele ser mayor que la del macho.

This large raptor tolerates a wide variety of habitats, and it is found in all continents except Antarctica. Furthermore, the osprey eats fish and nests near a water body.

 La vamos a encontrar  en una amplia variedad de hábitats en todos los continentes, excepto la Antártida, alimentándose de pescado y haciendo su nido cerca del agua, como por ejemplo rios, lagos, etc.
